Comprehensive data validation of a combined weekly time use and travel survey

A well-known problem in Household Travel Surveys (HTS) is item-nonresponse, which occurs when complete trips are not reported or only partial information for given. This article presents a comprehensive data validation effort (data completion and correction through immediate call-backs of the survey participants) on travel non-travel as part one-week Mobility-Activity-Expenditure Diary Survey. Validation recovered 2.5 percent reporting days mobile persons with increased number pre-existing by 3.5 percent. The characteristics these confirm extend findings from item-nonresponse studies without validation: majority new begin afternoon; they mainly short irregular; most important trip purposes home, work, shopping, leisure. 37 generated completely tours; females seem to under-report less than men do. analysis time use (activities) between showed that was recorded high accuracy completeness even before validation. study confirms typical patterns provides solution their mitigation direct follow-up cost fieldwork 12
